Washington D.C. has filed a lawsuit against AT&T claiming that the telecom company should turn over unused calling card balances.
The attorney general's office argues that "AT&T's prepaid calling cards must be treated as unclaimed property under district law", and thus the AT&T balances are Washington D.C.'s property if they have not been used for 3 years and the customer's last known address was in Washington D.C.
If the case is won, it would be a major blow to AT&T: unused balances account for perhaps 5 to 20 percent of the calling card market, according to Reuters, which broke the news.
