AT&T Sued by Washington DC Over Unused Calling Cards

at&t logoWashington D.C. has filed a lawsuit against AT&T claiming that the telecom company should turn over unused calling card balances.

The attorney general's office argues that "AT&T's prepaid calling cards must be treated as unclaimed property under district law", and thus the AT&T balances are Washington D.C.'s property if they have not been used for 3 years and the customer's last known address was in Washington D.C.

If the case is won, it would be a major blow to AT&T: unused balances account for perhaps 5 to 20 percent of the calling card market, according to Reuters, which broke the news.

A Standalone Media Player for your Flash Videos

Popular video players like the Real Player, VideoLAN VLC, GOM Player and the Miro Vdieo Player can play Flash video* (FLV) without requiring any extra codecs. If you are on Windows, you can download the free K-Lite codec pack to play FLV files right inside your Windows Media Player while Mac users can install Perian to turn QuickTime into an FLV player.

FLV Player for your Flash Videos

Most people really don't need a standalone FLV player because their existing media players can already handle the Flash Video format but in case you are still looking for one, check out FLVPlayer HD.

FLV Player HD is a simple Adobe AIR application with a minimalist interface that can playback FLV files in either full screen or the current player size. You can either use the Open button in the software to play FLV file or just drag-n-drop the video file onto the player window to start playback.

FLV Player HD is an AIR app so you may use it on a Mac, Windows or Linux machine.

[*] When you download a video from the Internet from sites like YouTube, chances are that your download manager will save that file using the FLV format. To learn more, see this detailed guide to Flash Videos.

Looking for PostSecret Archives?

PostSecret is the largest blog in the world that doesn't carry any advertisements and, as most of you would agree, it's extremely addictive — every time you read those anonymous confessions written on postcards, you also feel like sharing one of your own secrets with the world.

Browse the PostSecret Archives

The Postsecret website gets around 1.2 million visitors every week but what may surprise you more is the size of this blog — even though Frank Warren, the one-man army behind PostSecret, has been religiously posting new postcards on the site since the past couple of year, the total number of pages on the site is exactly one.

For some unknown reason, the PostSecret site maintains no archives so if you missed any of the previous editions of Sunday postcards, you'll have to either use an image search engine — like Bing with infinite scroll or Google Images —  or maybe you can buy one of these PostSecret books.

Wait, there's another easy option as well. Go to Google Reader and subscribe to this feed. While the PostSecret feed is loading, just keep scrolling down the list and you'll have the last 200 days of PostSecret archive on your screen courtesy the built-in cache of Google Reader.

If you are looking for even older postcards, check out the Internet Wayback Machine at archive.org – they have a backup of every PostSecret image that has been made available online since 2005. And to download the PostSecret images on your computer for offline browsing (or say, for making a photo collage), check this page – you can use wget to download all the images though am not sure if it's an official PostSecret archive or just another mirror site.

Movie Downloads Coming to YouTube

Bollywood film-maker Vinod Chopra has announced that their latest film, Three Idiots, will soon be available for download on the YouTube website.

Google Enters Pay-Per-Download Business

You could always download videos from YouTube using "hacks" but this is probably the first time where people will be able to "legally" download a full-length movie from YouTube after paying Google a certain fee.

The film producers won't say how much a viewer would have to shell out in order to download the movie from YouTube, the size of downloads (this can be a major deterrent in India considering our average connection speeds ) and whether there would be any other restrictions attached.

In any case, if this "pay-per-download" experiment proves successful, we can surely expect more such "online releases" in the future because it will become much easier for producers to tap a global audience. The Hindu and ET have more details on this story.

The 3 Idiots movie is already running in theatres across India with some innovative marketing but its YouTube debut will happen only after 12 weeks so as not to affect the ongoing ticket sales. Here's an HD Trailer of the same movie on, you guessed it right, YouTube!
